Hi - I'm Jan!

I develop and test adaptive approaches for governing marine biodiversity change, connecting ecological observations and predictions with the institutional, legal and societal conditions required for conservation action.

This means not only communicating biodiversity science. It is to study - and improve - the evidence-to-decision chain: how change is detected, interpreted, evaluated and turned into legitimate, implementable decisions.

My current main focus is the AGELESS project, where I am the central node for policy & societal engagement, coordinating across four BMFTR-funded projects. I lead the co-design of our research and facilitate the dialogue between researchers, policy and civil society to ensure our science best informs biodiversity conservation strategies in Areas Beyond National Jurisdiction (ABNJ).
